Aftercare 4 life

Metamorphosis Aftercare groups are held biweekly at the centre. However, during these times with Covid-19 we have moved our aftercare group online.

Metamorphosis aftercare groups are just one aspect of the transformation into the new version of you. Aftercare goes hand in hand with our continuation of care program. Aftercare for addiction may be one of the last steps in a process that leads to healthy living. But in many cases, it can be the most critical juncture of recovery. The importance of the aftercare process is simple; without it, there is a chance that an individual fresh into recovery may fall into relapse.

A challenge that many people face while completing a residential program, is that while in the protective bubble of treatment, the individual is away from everyday stressors and has a complete sense of safety. The individual will then go from that environment back into the old environment that got them to treatment in the first place. Attending the aftercare groups helps with the transition back into the real world. A slow integration back into daily life after treatment is necessary and highly encouraged. Metamorphosis’ addiction aftercare program continues the road to positive change.

Aftercare programs for our clients start with a focused relapse prevention program that takes place shortly after a client begins their inpatient treatment. Once the intensive process is over, the real work truly begins. These newly learned behaviors and alternative ways of thinking will replace the more harmful behaviors that led to the addiction in the first place.

Moreover, aftercare for substance abuse continues with therapy, however, this is at a reduced and less intense level. It is important for people at this point to get a feel for a new, more independent way of living and constant therapy undermines that. There are still occasional individual therapy sessions, and group therapy sessions are an important way to build a sense of community with other individuals with lived experience. If it is required, there may be family counseling to help both the addict and family members work together on this new phase of addiction aftercare through a new chapter of recovery.

Addiction aftercare is also about learning from mistakes. No one is perfect and sometimes a relapse may occur. But with proper counseling, group therapy, and support from friends, family, peers and even professionals, these relapses do not have to mean that recovery was a failure. It is important during the recovery process to not just celebrate the victories, but address in a mature compassionate manner all of the mistakes as well. Counseling and group therapy can help to reinforce, re-engage, and encourage people to not give up even after mistakes have been made. Teaching people this resolve and courage, ultimately allows them to overcome their struggles and addiction.

Sober living and aftercare for substance abuse are important and are the final components of getting someone that has entered recovery to stay in a constant state of success. Overcoming an addiction is not just about cleaning out the body, it is about giving people both the tools and the emotional health to not feel like they need to take a substance to make life easier or more bearable.
